Supernatural Location Tour with John Marcynuk

A walking tour of New Westminster, Vancouver, with John Marcynuk. August 25th 2012.

John Marcynuk, Art Director on Supernatural, contacted Jules (from Superwiki) prior to VanCon, about taking some fans on a tour. Jules invited a small group of us along, and here’s the result. I’m not sure how interesting this post will be to anyone else, but I had a great time. Thanks once again to John, for taking the time to do this for us, and to Jules, for inviting me along.

We took the sky train out to New Westminster on the Saturday morning of VanCon (unfortunately missing both Russ Hamilton’s and Julie McNiven’s panels, but this more than made up for it).

On leaving the train station we walked, literally across the road, to the building Cas & another angel fell out of in 6.03 The Third Man.

While taking photos, we were approached by a man who turned out to be Jason Fischer (Assistant Production Co-ordinator on Supernatural). He was there with a crew filming for a new series of “Divine”, and offered to show us inside the building, and who were we to decline an unexpected invitation? The interior was unrecognisable as the same building, and it was interesting that the view from the window was completely different from what the boys saw, after watching the angels swan dive onto Sam’s “plastic piece of crap” car.

After leaving Jason, we caught a bus to Queen’s Park where an obliging gentleman out walking his dog, offered to take a pic of us. (that’s his dog in the pic).

John had many interesting things to tell us, but I find it really difficult to walk, take photos, & write at the same time, so I missed a lot. He asked us not to post addresses for the private homes, as they didn’t want to have hordes of fans driving past and upsetting Supernatural’s great relationship with the residents of New Westminster. He did give us permission to post the photos, so if anyone can find the locations, good luck to you.

Some info from John:

As art director he’s responsible “for everything in the background” – including motel rooms.

Supernatural uses New Westminster because it looks very U.S.A.

He trained as an architect and moved into tv by accident. (He did explain how that happened, but like I said – walking/writing/photo-taking at the same time is not something I’m good at.)

The corridor from Crowley’s lab (that Sam went to get the blood in 7.01) was added onto the set especially for that episode.

John told us he was worried about us (the fans) because we know too much. At several places we were able to name particular episodes/scenes when John couldn’t remember.

His favorite episodes (up to that point)? Time After Time, Meet the New Boss, Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magical Menagerie.

I’ve added screencaps alongside the pics I took, just to help place the various locations. Some of them do look a little different “in real life”.

Thanks for this! I would love to go on a walk like this in Vancouver next August!! You have inspired me! Cheers and Happy New Year! Sue

    • It really was a fantastic experience, and I hope John wants to do it again in 2013. It always amazes me that both cast and crew are so eager to do things with the fans.

Amazing story. Interesting to see the pictures in comparison to the screen shots. I’d never would’ve recognized them otherwise. Thanks for sharing that wonderful story. And on a selfisch note: I hope we can do something similar in 2013!!!!!
